Which Blinds are Best for Privacy?

Although blinds have various uses within the home, there is one primary function that stands out above all the others and is the main reason why we need to purchase blinds: for privacy.

Whether your house backs onto a main road, is overlooked by other houses or you simply need your privacy for when the daylight fades, we all have a need for blinds to shelter us from the outdoors.

From Venetian to faux wood and roller, ultimately, all different blind styles offer privacy, however some will provide more privacy than others due to the type of material they are made from and their thickness.

Here is a selection of some of the best blind styles for privacy, so if this is the most important thing to you when it comes to buying blinds, you’ll know what your best options are.

Blackout blinds

A blackout blind is a great option if you’re looking for 100% privacy. Blocking out all daylight, blackout blinds are available in a range of various different colours and styles, including roller, perfect fit, Roman and skylight blinds, plus, they don’t ruin the aesthetics of your blind either.

Venetian blinds

Venetian blinds usually have small holes in the slats for the cords to run through. However these small holes let in light, so if you’re looking for total darkness in your room then make sure you look for routless slats for your Venetian blinds.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds are made from a thicker material than other blinds and are often fully lined, making them the perfect choice if privacy is important to you. The extra lining also offers more shading in the room, but even without the extra lining, Roman blinds are highly efficient at blocking out the light and therefore allow you to retain your privacy when closed.

Plantation shutters

Whether wooden, PVC, mirrored or faux wood, when closed, shutters are essentially small doors, so will completely block out all light that enters a room, offering full privacy whenever needed.

Vertical blinds

The slats of vertical blinds can very cleverly be tilted, but not completely closed, to offer privacy whilst still letting the natural light flow into a room. Vertical blinds are a versatile and cost effective blind option that come a wide range of colours and patterns to suit all interiors.

Top tip: If privacy is a main concern for you, be sure to avoid daylight blinds. This particular blind style purposefully lets daylight flood into a room, even when they are fully closed, so may not offer total privacy at night time.
