How to Care for Your Wooden Plantation Shutters

Open wooden shutter in home

Not only are shutters an elegant and stylish addition to your home, but they are also the easiest of all window dressings to keep clean.

Investing in bespoke wooden shutters is no small feat, but with the right maintenance they can last for decades. So, if you’ve recently had a set of swish wooden plantation shutters fitted in your home, it’s important that you learn about best care practices so that you can keep them in tip-top condition and ensure you get the most out of them. Today, we’re going to share with you our top tips for caring for your beautiful wooden shutters.

Be wary of excessive moisture

First things first, it’s essential to understand that wooden products of any kind can be negatively impacted by excessive moisture.

As wood is a natural fibre, it responds to moisture by swelling as it absorbs the moisture and then shrinking as it dries. Unfortunately, this can lead to warping, which is certainly something you will want to avoid.

Because of this, here at Angel Blinds & Shutters, we would strongly advise that you avoid using excessive amounts of water or liquid cleaning solutions when you come to clean your shutters.

Cleaning dust from your shutters

To take care of day-to-day dust, simply use a dry, microfibre cloth or duster to clean your shutters.

To do this, simply tilt your wooden slats to the open position and carefully wipe along each slat from the centre towards the outer edge. For a quick clean, you can also close your slats and wipe the slats and frame all over for a general dusting.

Removing built-up debris

Looking to remove any build-ups of debris from the edges and corners of your shutters? We have the perfect tip.

To tackle debris, simply take a dry, clean toothbrush and wipe and use it to clear the debris away from the edges. You can use a dry cloth to gather any of this and wipe it away.

Tackling marks and stains

Despite your best efforts to keep them spick and span, sometimes your shutters will be blighted by stubborn marks or stains that will simply not budge with a dry cloth alone.

To tackle pesky marks, rub lightly with a damp cloth, continuing to apply gentle pressure until the stain lifts. Be careful not to rub too hard or use any cleaning products, as this could negatively impact the paint or varnish finish on your beautiful shutters. As soon as the stain has lifted, use a clean, dry cloth to wipe away any residual moisture.

Using a hoover on your shutters

You may also wish to use a hoover to clean your shutters.

This can be a great way to thoroughly remove dust from your bespoke window shutters, as long as you handle them carefully and have the appropriate attachment.

To clean your shutters with a hoover, ensure you have a soft-edged upholstery attachment to hand. Avoid using a hard-edged or metal nozzle as these types of attachments could be liable to damage your shutters. With your hoover, you can clean your slats the same way you would with a duster or cloth, by opening your slats to clean each one individually, or closing the slats and sweeping the hoover over all of the slats and the frame surround, too.

Our made-to-measure wooden plantation shutters are beautifully crafted and built to last. Get in touch today for a free quotation.
