Blinds for Bay Windows – What are the Options?

Blinds for Bay Window SeatFor some people, bay windows are the ultimate dream. Often leftover features of Victorian houses, bay windows are most commonly found in period properties, but can also now be found in more modern homes.

Bay windows make a great feature for any room, whether in your bedroom or living area. They open up the space, letting in optimum daylight, increase the flow of natural light and their wide glass panes offer a beautifully clear view.

Despite their attractions however, it can be rather tricky knowing how best to dress them. Classic curtains can beautifully complement the traditional appearance of a bay window, while blinds offer a chic, contemporary shift and are a low maintenance option in terms of easy cleaning.

Made to measure blinds

The nature of the shape of a bay window can often make fitting blinds rather awkward, and you can easily be left with ill-fitting blinds if all three don’t line up correctly. So, before you even begin delving into the world of different styles, colours, patterns etc. you should make sure you opt for made to measure blinds. This will ensure that they sit flush and have a neat and tidy appearance for a perfect fit.

Roman

Roman blinds are ideal for a square style bay window and they can insulate your home and keep any unwanted draughts at bay. If you are a perfectionist, be aware that when the blind is folded back, the folds of the side blinds may fall differently to the folds of the centre blind. However, this can rectified by setting the central blind behind the two side blinds, as the central fold will then swing back behind the side blinds.

Curtains

If you want to decorate your bay window even further, then consider a thin valance to soften the edges of the window. You could choose a colour or pattern to offset against a neutral blind to give it a unique touch. Alternatively, you could reverse this and team a bold patterned blind with a plain curtain.

Roller

To enhance the light entering your room, a lightweight roller blind can create the perfect ambience and allow light to gently filter into the room. Roller blinds are simplistic and don’t dominate the original look and feel of your bay window.

Shutters

If you’re looking for something strong and long lasting so you don’t have to replace them any time soon, then shutters could be the perfect solution for your bay window. They define your window, heighten the security of your property and are available in a wide range of colours. If you want to flood your room with natural light, then opt for larger slats, or if you would rather have more privacy and gently filter the light into the room, then go for thinner slats.

Vertical

For a classic feel to your Victorian bay window, vertical blinds can look stunning. With the option to filter through as much light as you like, they will hang the full length of your window and can easily be adjusted to suit your privacy needs too.
