Why You Should Opt for Blinds Over Curtains

When it comes to window dressings, blinds and curtains tend to stand out as the two most popular styles.

Of course, some people like to opt for a combination of both in their homes, which can make for an incredibly cosy, luxurious and warm atmosphere. However, fitting your home out with blinds and curtains in every room can be incredibly costly, and is not a realistic choice for most people. So whilst you may opt for a combination of the two in some of your rooms, in others, you will likely have to choose from a toss-up. So the question stands, should you choose blinds or curtains?

Here at Angel Blinds & Shutters, we’re well-versed in the many benefits of fitting your home out with quality, made-to-measure blinds. So today, we would like to share with you the numerous upsides to this style of window dressing, and why we believe that you should opt for blinds over curtains. Let’s get into it!

First things first, what do both products have in common?

Blinds and curtains do have their unique advantages, but there are some shared benefits offered by both of these styles of window dressing.

  • Privacy. Both curtains and blinds offer a considerable level of privacy and protect your home from prying eyes.
  • Light control. Both offer the ability to control light levels in your space, to varying degrees depending on the quality and design of your chosen product.
  • Heat retention. Curtains and blinds can provide insulation for your home, with different designs offering lesser and greater levels of heat retention.

Now, what are the key benefits offered by blinds?

Whilst these two styles of window dressing have some advantages in common, there are also some upsides offered uniquely by blinds. Let’s take a look at those now.

Affordability

Blinds tend to be more cost-effective than curtains.

This is particularly true if you are looking for a quality product that will allow considerable light control and effective insulation. You can often get a lot more bang for your buck when it comes to blinds.

This is a real plus point, not just for homeowners but also for rental properties, guest accommodation and businesses, too, where keeping costs down is often a top concern.

So, if your budget is tight, it could be in your best interests to opt for blinds.

Easy to clean and maintain

Dirt and marks on blinds tend to be pretty simple to remove (check out this how-to guide from Good Housekeeping for tips), usually requiring only a damp cloth and some mild soap.

Cleaning curtains is often a different story altogether. Stains tend to hold more robustly to curtain fabrics, and a thorough cleaning usually requires them to be taken down from their railings and washed or dry cleaned, which can incur a considerable deal of hassle, time and cost.

A more hygienic choice

Curtains tend to trap and hold a greater amount of dust than most blinds.

Plus, whilst it is relatively easy to run a duster across the full surface of your blind – particularly with simple styles such as roller blinds – it is much more arduous to dust and air out your curtains.

Curtains also hold more mould and mildew than blinds, particularly if the room they are in is not properly ventilated.

Greater potential for insulation

Now, don’t get us wrong, curtains certainly do offer a level of insulation. This is particularly true for heavier curtains and those with insulating linings.

However, many blinds simply offer far greater heat retention than any curtains on the market possibly could. This is because blinds have a closer fit to your window, making them more efficient at trapping heat in and preventing cold air from entering via the window. Our favourites for tip-top insulation efficiency are Duette blinds or Perfect Fit blinds.

If the rooms in your home present an issue of heat loss via the windows (perhaps because your windows do not perform well, or if they are simply very large or you have many of them) then blinds are certainly the most efficient choice to go some way towards correcting this problem.
