How to Maximise Space in a Small Room

small living room

Transforming a cramped and claustrophobic ‘box’ room into a comfortable and welcoming space can seem like an impossible task. However, by applying some simple tricks you can create the illusion of a much larger, airier and brighter space.

Today, we are sharing our three top tips on how to make the most of the smaller rooms in your home.

1. Keep it minimal

The more possessions and patterns you add to a small room, the more cluttered it can feel. To avoid this, clear out any unnecessary furniture and keep your space tidy (easier said than done, we know). This minimal concept actually applies to all spaces and is very on-trend right now.

Don’t stress though, minimal does not have to mean all-white space as we know this can feel a bit cold. You could try adding warming textures and colour through wooden blinds, a feature wall and some throws. A focal point in smaller spaces is a great way to add some character and colour.

2. Let the light in

Any room will appear larger when it is well-lit. Maximising natural light makes a room feel bigger, brighter and more welcoming.

For smaller spaces, it is important to ensure you have a window dressing that is effective for light management. This makes shutters, roller blinds and perfect blinds ideal options, allowing you control over the amount of light entering the room and thereby setting the ambience to suit your mood.

Unfortunately, good natural light isn’t always an option. There are however other ways to brighten up your space. Light and bright walls are more reflective and can make a space feel more open and airy. Dark shades on walls and furniture tend to absorb light, making rooms feel more cramped.

Give your room a new lease of life with a lick of light paint.

3. Ditch the drapes

It also might be time to rethink those curtains as they can intrude on your space. Eliminating these can help to open up the room. Heavy drapes and curtains will block out natural light and make your space feel smaller and darker.

Getting rid of curtains does not mean you need to substitute privacy for space. Our wooden shutters or blinds are a great way to maintain privacy and security without taking up unnecessary space.

We hope we have been able to shed a little light on how you can make the most of your smaller rooms. With a little love and attention to detail, any room in your home can be transformed from claustrophobic to comfortable.
